Water is the source of hydration and an essential element for survival on Earth. Drinking water in right quantity is vital for wellbeing. It is a necessity in the food and beverage industry. As water consumption is increasing different sources are taken into account. Water recycling, rainwater harvesting, well water, desalinated water, etc. all are potential water sources nowadays.

A report asserts that 884 people across the globe do not have access to safe water. 1 amongst 8 people enclose hard water access which has affected their health. Let’s check what hard water is prior to the consequences.

What is hard water?

Hard water is the number of minerals i.e. calcium and magnesium present in the water. Water hardness sometimes is due to other minerals like fluoride, silica, zinc, strontium, aluminum, iron, sulfide, phosphorous and many more. For complete removal of hardness install a water softener at your home. To determine water hardness hire a professional to take a water test. However, if you are experiencing any such issues you have hard water:

  • No lather when you wash clothes or dingy laundry
  • Stains on tiles, utensils, and floor
  • Scaling on water appliances like a water heater, coffee maker or boilers.
  • Dry and lumpy skin
  • Rough hairs and sudden hair fall
  • Clogged pipes and bathtubs

Major Health Issues Caused by Hard Water Consumption:

WHO (World Health Organization) at its Geneva Conference stated that hard water has no adverse health effects. In fact, hard water provides essential supplements required by the body. Also, the intestinal absorption of human body flushes the excess amount of minerals from the body. The problems occur when renal insufficiency causes a decrease in magnesium excreta. This turns positive to negative function. When magnesium and sulfate are in concentrated amounts and taken in large quantity acts as laxatives which result in diarrhea. However, it did not deny that taking anything in excess quantity may cause health issues but did not stand by.

So, as per different reports, studies and examinations held worldwide by different doctors and scientists affirm few major health issues caused by drinking hard water. However, there are contradictions to it and no firm evidence.

Cancer: An important study was conducted by Taiwanese scientists. They found hard water negative statistical association with various types of cancer morbidity rate with a hardness of calcium. Gastric cancer with respect to calcium intake had a protective effect. Similarly certain types of cancer like pancreatic, colon and rectal proven lowered mortality rates. A study by researchers also illustrated magnesium positive impact on esophageal and ovarian cancer. However, liver cancer and magnesium intake did not show similar such trends.

Cardiovascular Disease: An inverse relationship between cardiovascular disease and hard water has been reported on a large scale. However, it depends on the socio-economical, climatic and geographical factors. Few studies also mentioned risk factors like hypertension and elevated serum lipids. Even magnesium intake proved to be good for ischemic heart disease.

Alzheimer Disease: Aluminum can cause Alzheimer disease controversial. In a few cases, it caused renal failure and brain pathology. However, there is no significant evidence to prove the same. Although in the areas where aluminum was present in a concentrated form in water Alzheimer’s disease was 1.5 times higher.

Cerebrovascular Mortality: Some reports show the protective impact of magnesium intake on cerebrovascular disease. Lowering of stroke risk was observed who ate magnesium-rich foods. It is seen that blood pressure was marked low. Magnesium is a natural enzyme activator that regulates metabolism and other functions. It is beneficial to consume water containing magnesium to eliminate Mg deficiency.

Diabetes: Magnesium daily intake should be 300 to 400mg per day as per age and gender. It is because Mg channelizes different ATP actions, enzyme regulations, and insulin secretion. A clinical study state that magnesium deficiency may trigger diabetes. However, the role of subclinical magnesium studies has to be conducted with diabetes risk.

The Bottom Line:

A confusing situation is shaped with a positive correlation of magnesium and calcium with health concerns. However, all the studies do not have any verified documentation and approvals. If we drop these protective effects it cannot be denied that water hardness causes skin and household troubles. So, it is always advisable to get a water hardness level checked before consumption.
