Rice University was chartered by William Marsh Rice as the "William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Literature, Science, and Art" in 1891.  The terms of the charter insisted that proceeding with the creation of the institute did not commence until after his death.  Classes were to commence, the year was 1912, twelve years after his death.
